Terry N Whiteman

April 5, 1944 — September 9, 2014

Terry N. Whiteman, age 65, succumbed after battling early onset Alzheimer's disease and stomach cancer at his home in Orleans, Indiana on September 9, 2014. Terry was born in Boone County, Indiana to Martha Jean Reese Whiteman and Thomas Herald Whiteman on April 5, 1949, and they precede him in death. Terry graduated from Indiana Central College, now the University of Indianapolis, with a Business Education Degree, and he received a scholarship to attend Drake University in Iowa where he attained a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation. He began his life long career of educating, advocating and defending the rights of the developmentally disabled throughout Indiana at the sheltered workshop in Lebanon, Indiana. He spent 30 years working for the Indiana State Department of Protection and Advocacy and had a 5 year term of employment with the Indiana State Board of Health, directing the surveys of nursing homes and group homes. Indiana Protection and Advocacy established The Terry Whiteman Distinguished Peer Award for his dedication to individuals with disabilities. Terry was active in his community throughout his life, serving on the board of First Chance Center, as President of the Library Board, and on the Planning Committee for the Paoli School's Gifted and Talented Program. He loved coaching boys and girls sports teams. He was a participating member of the Paoli Mennonite Fellowship. Terry enjoyed many hobbies, including playing harmonica with the band "Box of Chocolates", working on his 50 acre farm, gardening, reading, writing short stories and poems, golfing, and riding his bicycle. He even raced his bike at the Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis. He leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Sarah Jones Whiteman, his two children, Emmalyn R. Moore of Indianapolis and Alexander J. Whiteman of Paoli, and one brother, Dr. Timothy R. Whiteman of Danville. Terry was loved and cared for by many extended family members, the Care Team from Paoli Mennonite Fellowship, and many other dear friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Paoli First Chance Center. Funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Paoli Mennonite Church with Matt Pflederer officiating and  cremation to follow.  Visitation will be held Friday, September 12, 2014 at the church from 3:00 to 8:00 pm and from 9:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am at the Paoli Mennonite Church..Dillman-Scott funeral home is in charge of the arrangements Online Condolences can be made at Dillman- Scott Funeral home .Com
