Sally Christine Mitchell Copeland was born October 5, 1935 to Dwight J. Mitchell and Lillian F. Kendall Mitchell in French Lick, Indiana.
As a child she had a photo op with famous Hollywood star, Lana Turner on the steps of the French Lick Sheraton Hotel where she received an autograph. Several news outlets ran the story about Ms Turner and her escort Howard Hughes while visiting French Lick. The photo remains framed in the halls of the hotel. Many decades later, Sally was interviewed about the meeting and growing up in French Lick.
She attended French Lick Springs Valley High School and was crowned Basketball Queen in her sophomore year.
Sally studied piano as a child for several years. She played beautifully throughout her adult life for friends and family delighting everyone with her gift.
She married Clarence Edward Wineinger in 1952 and moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. They had four daughters, Susie, Linda, Christy and Rebecca. They were married for eighteen years.
As a young mother, she was active in her girls lives and the family home was filled with humor, music and love. When Linda and Christy joined Girl Scouts, she became the scout leader for their troop.
Sally was a graduate of Patricia Stevens Career College and Finishing School in Indianapolis. She became an instructor there until it’s closing in the mid 70’s and was beloved by her students. For 15 years she worked at LS Ayres in Glendale Shopping Mall where she was a makeup artist and top cosmetic sales woman for Clinique and Elizabeth Arden.
She retired and moved back to French Lick. In 2001 she was married to Philip E. Copeland. They were married for 18 years.
Sally has been a resident at Paoli Health and Living since 2016. She was President of residents meetings and a vocal advocate for residents concerns. She enjoyed playing piano for residents and staff, often being requested to play for church services at the nursing home.
