Paoli- Raymond “Bud” Farlow, 89, of Paoli, Indiana, passed peacefully at the IU Health Hospice Housein Bloomington July 3, 2016.The son of Paul and Clara Wells Farlow, Bud was born in Paoli June 10, 1927, one of eight siblings.
Bud attended Paoli High School, graduating in 1945 as class president. In 1944 and 1945, he played on two sectional champion basketball teams. During that time, he met his future wife, Betty Rose Strange Farlow, who survives him. Bud always felt his biggest win was getting an Orleans cheerleader to date a Paoli Rambler. It was a journey that lasted 68 years.
Bud was a true patriot, and after graduation he proudly enlisted in the U.S. Naval Service near the end of WWII. He began active duty June 1, 1945, and was honorably discharged in 1946, having achieved the rank of Machinist Mate 3C. His experiences provided him with memories to last a lifetime. He loved sharing these stories with the family, who never tired of listening.
After the Navy, Bud began working in the Farlow family business at Indiana Handle Company. He, along with his brother, Russel Farlow, ensured the continued success of their woodworking company and the IHC family for 63 years until their retirement in 2009. The company was a source of pride for the brothers as well as the community.
Bud enjoyed many pastimes during his life. Over the years, he enjoyed flying, golf outings with his buddies, and yearly fishing trips to Canada. He was a man who loved his family, and his favorite times were traveling across the country in his motor home with Betty by his side. In his later years, Bud enjoyed reminiscing about his many adventures, which were well-documented in photo albums and scrapbooks.
Over the years, Bud’s community involvement was seen in his many affiliations, which included Paoli VFW, Paoli Masonic Lodge, and Scottish Rite of Evansville. He served as President of Junior Chamber of Commerce, was on the Orange County Bank Board of Directors, and was a long-time member of the Paoli Cemetery Board. Bud maintained a life-long membership with the Paoli Friends Meeting.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents; four siblings: Mary Ethel Farlow, Robert Farlow, Thelma Hardman, and Doti Geralde.
