Marvin Duane Schmidt, 76 of Paoli, passed away Thursday October 15, 2015, at home surrounded by his family. He was born July 19, 1939, in Fredonia Kansas to Marvin and Elma Frey Schmidt. Willard Regier became his step-father when he was 12 years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Willard Regier, and one step- brother Eldon Regier. He married Sherylyn Huebert in her hometown of Henderson, Nebraska in 1968. The couple then moved to Goshen Indiana to attend Goshen College.
In 1956 he graduated from Whitewater High School in Kansas, moved to Denver, Colorado for a year, and then served two years in the service in Allentown, PA as a conscientious objector. When he returned to Newton he studied accounting at Wichita Business College. He was the manager for Hurst Products and later an accountant for the State of Kansas in Topeka.
Duane received his Physical Therapy degree from Indiana University in Indianapolis. He moved to Paoli in 1974 to support friends in starting the Comprehensive Health Care Clinic and the Paoli Mennonite Fellowship. He practiced Physical Therapy for years in Orange, Washington, and Lawrence Counties and was the Director of Rehab at IU Hospital of Orange County when he retired in 2002.
After nearly dying in 2002 Duane received a liver transplant. His experience as a patient at a medical center lead him to setting up the Good Samaritan Fund through the Orange County Community Foundation.
Duane never stopped learning new things or seeing new places. He was an artist at heart, always making time for stained glass or pottery. He loved to travel and used his free time and his many skills to see the world and to help others. His love for people and his desire to serve fit seamlessly into his life. His work as a Physical Therapist, swinging a hammer for Habitat for Humanity, volunteering for Mennonite Disaster Services after Hurricane Katrina, going with a Christian Peacemaker team to Chiapas Mexico, working as a cashier and serving on the board for Lost River Market, or engaging someone in conversation while eating at Mineral Springs was rooted in his love. His kindness touched many people.
