James R. Atkinson Born: August 26, 1921 Died: April 19, 2018 ________________________________________ Visitation 1:30 PM Sat., May 19, 2018 and Memorial Service to follow at 2:00 PM Location:  Paoli United Methodist Church, 794 E. State Rd 56, Paoli, IN James R. Atkinson, 96, passed away peacefully due to a failing heart on April 19, 2018, attended by family. He was undergoing treatment that could have been beneficial, but that was not to be. Just recently he completed his drive back to his Paoli home after his annual winter stay in Florida, an independent spirit of keen mind to the end of his days. He was raised on a Log Creek Road farm by his parents, Ross N. Atkinson and Eva Mae (Epperson), along with five siblings: Bruce, Donald, Rosetta Mae, Lois, and Barbara (Barbara Marquette now of Virginia Beach, VA). After graduating from Purdue University at age 20 as an electrical engineer, he worked for the U.S. Navy on the submarine detection system which assisted ships during the Battle of the Atlantic in WW II. He was sent on assignments across the country to solve the perplexing issues involved in the Navy’s cutting-edge HF/DF sonar equipment. In 1944 he married Mildred Carnes of Paoli. Their three children include Dianne Atkinson (West Lafayette, IN), Carolyn Frey (Highland Park, IL, husband Bertram Frey), and Amy Evelyn, who died in infancy.  His grandchildren are Carina and Maura Kak, as well as Clarissa (deceased), Christopher (wife Kyla Swart), and Nate Frey. Following his retirement from General Motors he chose to return to Paoli from Kokomo, IN, and Birmingham, MI. On Old Spring Mill Road Jim and Mildred’s home became a haven for many happy family celebrations. After a long illness Mildred passed away in 2003. Jim was active in the Paoli United Methodist Church and served on the Paoli Public Library Board. Ever the engineer, he enjoyed building and flying his own airplane and found close friends through his involvement in his church, the community, the flying club, and playing golf. During the winters he drove to warmer climes such as California and Texas, playing golf with his brother Don. This past winter he was near Christopher and Kyla in Florida. Over his long life he continued to solve one problem after another and was steadfast in his commitments to family, friends, church, and community. He will be greatly missed. Arrangements made by Dillman-Scott Funeral Home, 226 W. Campbell Street, Paoli, IN 47454. Online Condolences may be made at www.Dillman-Scott Funeral Home.com.
